Penang' 2nd bridge

This 2nd bridge which span 16.9km above water and 10.5km longer than the first, is the longest bridge in South -East Asia. It is a 24km link between Penang island and the peninsular.

Named after Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, it was officiatedby the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Satruday 1st March 2014.

Among those present to witness the opening of the RM4.5bil bridge were the Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansur, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawai and wife Toh Puan Jean Abdullah, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and foreign envoys.

It was opened to the public at 12.01am today.

Ten of thousands of Malaysians young and old including visitors joined in the celebrations were entertained by performers on various shows and a display of fireworks.

Motorists could a toll-free ride on the bridge for the first month and they are able to monitor traffic conditions on the bridge with their Android and iOS phones.

The bridge would power economic activities to a higher level between the island and the peninsular.

The first bridge was opened bt the former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad on August 3, 1985.
