Chua Boon Huat

The nation mourned his loss as soon as news filtered out that Chua had died with members of the hockey team in shock over his demise.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak tweeted that he was saddened by Chua’s death.“Saddened to learn about the passing of Jacky Ng and Chua Boon Huat.

They were both talented national athletes who will be missed by all,” Najib said in his message.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Chua’s death was a major loss to national sports. “On behalf of the ministry and government, I express my condolences to his family. Chua had brought much honour to the country in the field of hockey in the international stage. His services will be cherished forever,” he said before the start of question time in the Dewan Negara.

Hockey was Chua’s life as he had taken a keen interest in the game since his schooling days, first representing his SK Bandar Hilir, Malacca, when he was in Standard Four. He later playes for Malacca High Scool (Sekolah Tinggi Melaka).
