A JEWEL IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA - LAYANG LAYANG ISLAND

Tun Hussein was disinclined to claim Amboyna Cay but Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was determined to have a presence in the South China Sea. Though not a real island, Tun made his first trip to the Layang Layang Island in 1983. With Tan Sri Ibrahim, they waded through the thigh-deep water when their helicopter set down in shallow water after the high tide. From a humble hut, they stayed a night, today Layang Layang Island is a jewel in the South China Sea.
