Stamps, Stamp Collecting, and the 1970First Day Cover Stamps of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong

Most authorities credit the introduction of postage stamps to Sir Rowland Hill, a British educator who labored dilegently with Henry Cole and they introduced the first adhesive postage stamp which was issued on May 6, 1840.

New York's adhesive postage stamp appeared on Jan 1, 1842, while Switzerland made the first issue in March, 1843 and on August 1, 1843, Brazil introduced the three Bull's Eye stamps.

Stamp collecting developed steadily after the 1860's although it existed since 1840 and by 1946, about 110,000 varieties of stamps had been issued throughout the world.

Below is a First Day Cover issued to mark the installation of the fifth King for Malaysia, KDYMM AL SULTAN ALMUTASIMU BILLAHI MUHIBBUDDIN TUANKU ALHAJ ABDUL HALIM MUADZAM SHAH IBNI ALMARHUM SULTAN BADLISHAH.


The Sultan of Kedah had been the Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 21 January 1970 to 20 December 1975. Singapore's President said it is a truly historic occasion as His Majesty is assuming the office for a second time as the 14th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
