Dear Parents, it’s alright to have missed a dinner or two with you over the past twelve months and if I am not joining you for an auspicious and special reunion dinner (tuan nianfan 团圆饭) this Chinese New Year, it would be an unfilial act of me as son.

Filial piety is about a child and a parent bonding, so meaningful that the Chinese character shows a child putting his parent above him to appreciate their loving relationship.

Chinese New Year Date was fixed during the Han Dynasty, and this time the Lunar Year of The Rat in the western calendar fall from January 25, 2020 to February 11, 2020.

Auspicious and special reunion dinner is a once a year affair and the feast it super important to the Chinese so much so that an empty chair and a set of table utensils is reserved for a member of the family who truly can’t join.

The feast of reunion dinner isn’t going to be a rush-hour manner like when you are on a working day but more to a loving, slow and steady dining thereby harvesting harmony and peace. Such auspicious special bonding would bless everyone with harmony, health, peace, prosperity plus wealth and you will have a good start for this year.

The story behind a lucky reunion as said above, go like this … … … instead of quickly finished a reunion dinner, and go to bed early in the dark coolness of Spring, all member of the family get close together, hide in their homes, enjoy a long dinner to stay awake all night out of fear for a beast.

The beast Nian, a monster that rose from the depths to prey for cattle and people was frightened away by color of red and the noise of the firecracker by the united family. The family survived and live long and happily.

There is no doubt that I am going to fulfill the traditional home reunion dinner on the eve and to encore a few others in some restaurants in  Melaka  with family and friend before February 9, 2020.
