Ground Lights for Pedestrian. Safe Enough?
The heaviest usage of pedestrian crossing in Melaka is the
one connecting Dataran Pahlawan and Mahkota Parade. It is clearly highlighted
in yellow.
On each end there is a pole with a standard set of traffic
lights facing oncoming traffic exiting from a corner near Menara Taming Sari.
At arm height, there is a push button on the pole and
colored pictogram facing pedestrian over the other end. The third feature of
safety to pedestrian is a non-visual alert such as a sharp beep.
Adding on to these three features, now very glare lights
which can turn green and red has been installed at foot-level to upgrade road
safety to pedestrian. These glare lights is meant for pedestrian.
Because I saw a car speeding across the pedestrian crossing
when pedestrians have already walked nearly one third of the crossing makes me
to write this post.
That car is supposed to stop. This incident makes me think
that pedestrian is still at risk though signs for them is enough.
What about signs and preventive measures for drivers especially careless
driver?
