Dato' Ronald Gan

According to research by scholars, the temple commenced in 1818 at the latest estimate.

With that date it has a history of 200 years.

The Wangkang procession is Ong Yah's way to protect Malacca from harm.

The Malacca Wangkang tradition commenced in the mid 19th century.

Yong Chuan Tian deities, Tee Hoo Ong Yah and Cheng Wah Keong deities Chu Hoo Ong Yah jointly held the Wangkang procession i 1880, 1891,1905 and 1933 and the procession was well received by the local community.

There was then a lapse of 68 years.

In 2001, the procession was revivied on the orders of Tee Hoo Ong Yah.

Yong Chuan Tian organised the prayer sessions, built the Wangkang Barge and held the procession in the name of the Five Ong Yahs and it attracted the attention of scholars.

Then in 2012, Yong Chuan Tian held another Wangkang Ceremony that attracted scholars from abroad and within Malaysia contributing to the advancement of religious and cultural exchange, intellectual studies and research.

With a view to preserving the 200 years tradition of the Wangkang in Malacca, Yong Chuan Tian earnestly seeks recognition of the Wangkang both locally and internationally by:

  • 2013 : The Wangkang procession was listed as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Malaysia.
