Teo Chew Cultural Walk 44 Jalan Hang Jebat, Melaka 潮州文化坊

The land of nearly 3,800,000 square meters that extends from central Asia to the Yellow Sea, the South China Seas and the East, there is a famous historical and cultural city, Chaozhou. Chaozhou is also commonly known as Teochew.

In 2016, the then Wanita MCA Chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie encouraged all Teochew to take pride of their rich culture by sharing their historical artifacts, cuisine and arts.

Through her press conference, I come to know that Teochew not only possesses great living skills but also in business, proven by Li Ka-Shing, Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow and Tan Sri William Cheng. I have also heard sayings by friend, “ Teochew girls are all very ‘leng lui’ ”

1,000 years after the first migration before and during the Tang Dynasty, many Teochews discovered Malaysia and other Asean countries.

When it comes to serving guests, Teochew is found to be super generous. You probably did not know that these dishes originated from the Teochews – Bak Chor Mee, Bak Kut The, Braised Duck, Ho Chien, Yam Paste … … …

Teochew dishes formulated from Chaoshan, are cooked in a healthier and simpler manner, by extracting and blending natural seasoning from dried and fresh ingredients. WATCH

Teochew, Hokkien, Hainanese, Cantonese, and Kheh cuisines have been introduced to the public in Melaka way back and factually, of what Teochew sold as hawkers, 44 percent was on unprocessed and processed foods, and 54 percent on prepared foods. (Figures of 1973)

3 doors away from the Hang Jebat Mausoleum and if you come from Jalan Kubu, you can reach the Teo Chew Cultural Walk with its signage gold in color over us. Eye-catching, you may think that the renovation work is not completed yet but the wonder of the render of the wall was peeled off to unfold the splendid bricks introduced by the Dutch colonial is a craft of preservation one would wonder. I watched every visitor taking selfie and the smiling satisfaction on their faces.

Every inch of the other wall tell a story, from the guni bag on the bicycle to gummy handmade png kueh steamed in round bamboo baskets. I ate peach-shaped png kueh and I like it.
