An Appeal for fund to establish Yong Chuan Tian Cultural Museum

Yong Chuan Tian is amongst the oldest temple in Melaka and it is dedicated to Tee Hoo Ong Yah and Peh Hoo Ong Yah. According to research by scholars the temple commenced in 1818 at the latest estimate. With that date, the temple has a history of 200 years.

The Wangkang procession is Ong Yah’s way to protect Melaka from harm.

The Melaka Wangkang tradition commenced in the mid 19th century. Yong Chuan Tian deities, Tee Hoo Ong Yah and Cheng Wah Keong deities Chu Hoo Ong Yah jointly held the Wangkang procession in 1880, 1891, 1905 and 1933 and the procession was well received by the local community.

There was a lapse of 68 years. In 2001, the procession was revived on the orders of Tee Hoo Ong Yah. Yong Chuan Tian organized the prayer sessions, built the Wangkang Barge and held the procession in the name of Five Ong Yah and it attracted the attention of scholars.

In 2012, Yong Chuan Tian held another Wangkang ceremony that attracted scholars from abroad and within Malaysia, contributing to the advancement of religious and cultural exchange, intellectual studies and research.

With a view to preserving the 200 years tradition of the Wangkang in Melaka, Yong Chuan Tian earnestly seeks recognition of the Wangkan both locally and internationally:

-          2013 the Wangkang procession was listed as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Malaysia.

-          2017 jointly with The People Republic of China apply to UNESCO for Wangkang to be listed as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the World.

-          2018 obtained the consent of Cheng Hoon Teng Incorporation to establish a Wangkang Museum to protect and preserve the historic relics.

The Development Blue Print

The museum comprises of 4 sections:

1 The Wangkang Relics Display

Including century old knitting and sewing, old photos, sedan chairs, tiger head plaques, ceremonial prayers ornaments, the Wangkang 7-star oars etc.

2 Wangkan Ceremony and Replica Hall

To reconstruct a 1919 Wangkan replica, with the intent of enabling the visitors to feel the atmosphere of a Wangkang ceremony and procession.

3 Modern Air-conditioned Lecture Hall

Plan to accommodate 120 persons to show movies of the Wangkang as well as to propagate the principle of Ong Yah culture, Wangkang history and to promote Taoist teachings.

4 Hostel and Canteen

A plan for accommodation of 40 to 50 persons.

Schedule of Work

Expected Commencement : Late 2018
Expected Completion : End 2019

Budget : Ringgit Malaysia Two Million

The temple as so far collected a sum of Ringgit Malaysia Two Hundred Thousands to date. There remains a shortfall of Ringgit Malaysia 1.8 million.
