The Royale Museum
The Royal
Museum is an old palace which was the residence of several former Kedah rulers.
It is known by several popular names such as Kota Setar Palace, Mak Wan Besar
Palace, Bridal (Pelamin) Palace or Bridal House.
The palace
was built in 1735 when Alor Setar became the administrative centre for the
state of Kedah during the reign of DYMM Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin
Mu’adzam Shah II (1710-1778).
During the
Second World War the Japanese army occupied the palace. Later the palace was
used by a number of voluntary organizations before being abandoned.
In 1983, the
palace was renovated to become the Royal Museum and was officially opened on
July 15, 1983 in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Kedah
Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
The exhibits
at this Museum includes an array of regalia of Their Royal Highness Sultan
Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adza, Shah and other Kedah royal
descendants.
