Kedah State Museum
The history
of Kedah State Museum started on 3 January 1957 and was known as Kedah
Historical Museum. The museum was originally situated on the ground floor of
Balai Besar and was opened by Tan Sri Tunku Ismail bin Tunku Yahya, the second
Chief Minister of Kedah (1954-1959)
The increase
in the collection of exhibits justified the need to look for a new building of
its own. Hence on 30 December 1961, the Kedah Historical Museum had a new home
in Lebuhraya Darul Aman, Bakar Bata which lies next to the present new State
Museum.
The huge
response of the public to patronize the museum compelled the State Government
to build a more spacious building in 1997.
This new
building has a large exhibition hall, a workshop, library and a mini theatrette.
There are ten permanent gallery halls to cater for Culture, History, Natural
Environment, Statesmen, Transportation, Firearms, Manuscripts, Textile, Art
& Craft and Language and Literature.
The building
also has amenities such as an elevator, cafeteria, public toilets and a car
park.
