There was a person by the name of Mat Yassin. An English Resident couldn't pronounce his name properly yet he would call out the name daily as Jasin.


The Honourable Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa
B.K.S.J., K.M.N., A.M.N., P.J.K.

Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa was born on 13th June, 1923 at Kampung Rim in Jasin, Melaka. He received his early education at the Jasin Malay School in 1932 before furthering studies at the Sultan Idris Teacher's College at Tanjung Malim. After completing his course Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa began his teaching profession also dedicating his service to the enhancing of religion and responsibility to the nation.

Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa was dubbed as a pioneer administrator of newly opened secondary school. He served as Principal of the Tun Perak Secondary School, Seri Mahkota Secondary School of Umbai and the Dato Abd. Rahman Yaakub Secondary School of Merlimau.

His involvement in the fields of history and culture began in 1952. Together with a few individual of authority, Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa was instrumental in the formation of the Malay Literary Association and was involved in the organizing of the inaugural Malay Cultural Congress in Melaka.

He also produced radio scripts, articles for magazines and newspapers and even engaged himself in stage acting. He was responsible for the initiating of several cultural projects and among them were the Cultural Village, Community Games, Cultural Seminars. The Mini Malaysia Village and the Mini Museum in the districts.

Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa's love for art sees his work displayed at the National Art Gallery and also overseas. His most celebrated work entitled work entitled 'Demang' is one that has been carved out of a tree wood and which formed one of the beams of Negeri Sembilan's Chieftain Residences. This piece is now displayed overseas.

In the field of politics Tan Sri Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tapa made his mark in 1939 and at the same time become a member of the the FMS Volunteer Corps. His political overtures began as a member of UMNO both at the branch and section levels. In 1975, he was made Senator and in 1982 as a State Executive Council member holding the education, culture and youth portfolio. He was also at one time the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.
