The backdrops for the film “Secret” were
composed of beautiful scenes located mainly in the Tamsui district of New
Taipei City, such as Tamkang High School, Aletheia University, and the Little
White House (previously known as the Ching Dynasty chief tazation officer’s
residence in Tamsui). With gorgeous sunset reflecting off Tamsui River, it is a
singular experience to enjoy and relive every scene in the movie at twilight.
Tamkang University
Established in 1914, Tamkang University is
the earliest existing private high school in northern Taipei. On campus,
graceful old trees stand tall near the buildings which reflect a colorful
western style. The corridors of the school are where the male leading actor,
Yeh Hsiang-Lun and female leading actress, Lu Hsiao-Yu crossed paths multiple
times in a movie. The school’s great hall was also used to film the graduation
scene in the movie.
The school’s octagonal building is an
important setting for the time change in the movie. It was built in 1925, and
designed by Kenneth W. Dowie, a Canadian
missionary, who was also the school’s geometry teacher. The building is a
fusion of Eastern and Western architecture. In addition, the hallway features
three translucent windows that have etchings of maple leaves, crucifixes and
the Bible, as well as old pine, representing Canada, the Tamkang school badge,
and China respectively. They are also importamt representative spiritual norms
for the school’s teachers and students.
