Tamsui Fort was built during the 17th century when the Spanish occupied Tamsui.
Then the Dutch took over and built Fort San Domingo near its old location in 1644.
Because the Taiwanese referred to the Dutch as the "red-haired people", the fort also became known as the "Red Hair Fort".
The square-shaped structure was built with red bricks and is a significant reminder of the various foreign influences in Taiwan. It epitomizes Taiwan's modern history.
