Batik painting

Tourists enjoy on the spot do-it-yourself batik painting at GM Choo Art Gallery. Batik is a Javanese art.

Batik pattern and style normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch cultures. In the colonial times batik was a favourite of the Peranakan Chinese.

Baba and nyonya of Penang, Malacca and Singapore embrace batik as an important item that has to be included in their celebration, event and festival.

A lot of batik items are available on Jonket Walk and the hotels within the vicinity have laced the batik ambience to complete the Peranakan touch.

G.M. Choo Art Gallery is located at 54 on Tokong Road.
