Exploded from thousands of throats, Merdeka ! was announced to the world at the stroke of Friday midnight. That great roar tells the world : We are now a nation.

Choked with emotion, the Prime Minister designate, Tengku Abdul Rahman, the father of freedom, initiated the cry at the Selangor Club Padang in Kuala Lumpur.

Dato’ Razak, Dato’ Sir Cheng Lock, Mr. Sambanthan and Encik Senu stood with Tengku.
