Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee

Christened as Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, she became Queen Elizabeth II upon the death of her father, King George VI. On the balcony of the Buckingham Palace on May 12, 1937, a year after her father’s accession to the throne in 1936, Princess Elizabeth, 11 and Princess Margaret, 7, stood in the foreground. Elizabeth was born in London on April 21, 1926.

In 1937, she joined the Girl Guides and a Sea Ranger five years later. When she accompanied her family on a Royal state tour of South Africa, the future Queen of England plays tag  with crew of HMS Vanguard. After her engagement to naval lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in July, 1947, they got married on November 20 the same year in Westminster Abbey.

Born on November 14, 1948, Prince Charles together with his sister, Princess Anne have a photograph with the Queen who wore a priceless Williamson Diamond Brooch. That was a year after she was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953.

As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Williamson Diamond Brooch is on public display.

During the 16-days Royal visit in 1972, I have seen the Queen and Prince Philip at Porta de Santiago or A Famosa Fort, Malacca. The most widely travelled head of state, the Queen enjoyed the Royal journey aboard HMY Britannia. At that time in 1972, the football field and the rugby field in front of the Sacred Heart Convent,  Bandar Hilir English School and the Saint Francis Institution was a place where Tunku Abdul Rahman declared Independence on 31st August 1957 for Malaysia.

Beyond the field, the waters of the Straits of Melaka swept to shore. Today, the historic place is surrounded with beautiful Mahkota Parade, Dataran Pahlawan, Hatten Hotel, Holiday Inn, Equatorial Hotel, and many more, while the three schools keep its originality and thus their buildings have become a heritage.
