SUGAR, COOKING OIL, FLOUR, RICE AND GAS
Being the basic household goods, the Government has subsidised RM286 million on sugar. (Source: MOF & KPDNKK 2011) The actual price of sugar is RM2.50 per kg but the rakyat pays RM2.30 per kg. This means that the Goverment subsidises 20 cents per kg.
Sugar is obtained after the juice is extracted from the sugar cane by crushing the stems in a series of mills. Cane juice contains about 80 percent of water and 20 percent of sucrose. Most of the water present in the juice must be evaporated before the dissolved sucrose can crystallize. Granulated sugar which also known as 'plantation white sugar' after the centrifugal process.
The second household item, the Government subsidises is the cooking oil. Instead of paying the actual price of RM4.75, the rakyat pays RM2.50 and this subsidy allow the rakyat to use the RM2.25 per kg for other things. The total subsidy is RM1.63 billion. (Source: MOF & KPDNKK 2011)
