HINDUISM & MASIMAGAM FESTIVAL IN MELAKA

The religious and social system of India is Hinduism. Hinduism is the word used for the new Brahmanism which came into being after the decline of Buddhism in India. The two great Indian epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana, belong to their original form to the Brahmanic age.

Lakshami is the goddess of prosperity. Vishnu is one of the principal of Hundu deities. Saraswati is the goddess of learning. Siva is the Destroyer, the second of the Hindu deities. Ganesha is the god of success. Agni is a guardian deity. Surya is the Sun god. Indra is the king of heaven.

In a narrower sense, the Hindus are that part of the population of the Aryan origin which in prehistoric times migrated from the north-west into the Ganges district and later spread over the south.

As early as 5am at the country oldest Hindu temple, the 18th century Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple in Goldsmith Lane, thousands of devotees would gathered to worship the annual journey to the 152 years Arulmigu Sanasimalai Andavar Temple in Krubong. It is a historic monument. Along the journey, the devotees would peak over 50,000 in numbers during the Masimagam Hindu Festival.

Datuk Dr. S. Subramaniam with a handful of friends initiated the 28 years tradition and the highlight of the festival is a 12km procession of the silver chariot bearing the statue of Lord Murugan.

The event is taking place again in 2012 early March. See more at www.youtube.com/user/GhinaBalan
