Russian Land

Russia is an immense country and her land is nearly one-sixth of the land surface of the earth. In the north near the Arctic Circle, wandering tribes keep reindeer within the frozen ground all the year. The world's largest continuous forest belt the south with abundance supply of elm, oak, birch and pine. Extending into Asia, millions of cattle, horses and sheep graze.

In those days, the Vikings were renowned throughout the world for their bravery. There was a Tsar who was not afraid to learn and the most famous of the Romanoffs was Peter the Great. He went abroad to search for knowledge and applied what he learned after his return to Russia. For that, Peter travelled to Holland and England and also to other countries. Peter helped his people to acquire knowledge through libraries and museums.

Alexander III returned to the stern methods of government of the earlier tsars as he thought extension of liberty had been a failure and he had great faith in his secret police, which became an important agency of the Government.

Russia, in the past, had extended her power and in Europe, Rumania, Yugoslovia, Hungary and Poland were some of the places that became Russian "satellites". They became totalitarian states, ruled by the Communist Party. They were called the "countries behind the iron curtain," for it was as though an iron curtain had been let down between them and the free nations of the world.

Russia has rich resources in crop-lands, forests and minerals. While one-eighth of her land is suitable for agriculture, Russia's timber lands cover several millions of square miles; an important source of national wealth not considering yet the rich deposits of uranium, platinum, gold, manganese, copper, zinc, lead, and nickel.
