Midas and the Golden Touch

There was a King of Phrygia whose name was Midas.

Once upon a time, Midas had the chance to do a favor for the god Dionysius and in return the god had granted Midas's wish. Midas thought the more gold he could have the better he would be and his wish was granted by Dionysius even though Dionysius felt sad about Midas choice.

The first thing that Midas touched which turn into gold was his throne. The soft silken cushions turned hard into gold and Midas was enchanted. He continued to touch every items as he walked about the hall and they too turned into pure hard gold.

Quickly, he stepped out of his hall and went into the garden which his daughter loved. Touching from bush to bush and from plant to plant, the colorful flowers and their fragances vanished as they too turned into hard pure gold. The churpings of the birds and the busy hum of the bees was gone after the flowers gave up their colors and their fragances.

Midas got his slaves to bring him food after he got into the hall again from the garden but the food and drink turned into gold when his lips touched them. Suddenly, his daughter rushed in and cried out with a spray of golden roses in her hand. When he lovingly put his hand on his daughter head as she flung herself into her father arms, she stiffen into a golden statue. Hopelessly, Midas sat in silent for long when all his servants fled but the caring Dionynsius returned upon sun set.

Taking Dionynsius advice, Midas washed his power away in a river, and as he took the river water, the bed became a stream of golden sands when he stepped out upon the bank. The river water made his daughter and her garden alive, with refreshing fragances and the beautiful churpings of birds and the musical huming of the bees.
