STEEL

Alloys, or mixtures of metals, are the most useful materials man has for making huge structures, like buildings, bridges, automobiles, airplanes and even kitchen appliances. Almost every piece of metal we see today is an alloy of two or more metals.

Our most useful metal is steel which is technically an alloy of iron and carbon together with other alloying metals such as silicon, nickel and manganese. Metals such as tungsten, vanadium and molybdenum added to carbon steel to develop certain properties, as high-speed steel.

The need for alloys arose early in man's history. Bronze is the 1st. alloy made by primitive men over four thousands years ago. Bronze Age was a long period of time until man was able to build fires hot enough to seperate iron from its ores not before some 2,600 years when Iron Age began.

Manganese steel is a strong, tough metal.

Stainless steels are some of our most useful alloys for many industries. After contracting by a negative 6.7 percent in 2009, steel use increased by some 11 percent to about 1,300 mmt in 2010. The petroluem industries need steel, the food industries need steel and the medical fields need steel.

Japan steel use increase in 2010, India's steel demand is expected to grow by 13.7 percent in 2011, and in 2011 too, China will account for about 46 percent of world steel use.

Stainless steel panels is used by the Mobil Building in New York City.
