SAHARA, THE GREAT DESERT

The northern part of Africa is a desert, the great Sahara.

Seen from the side, Africa is shaped like a man's head and the equator crosses about where the man's ear would be.

High above sea level, rain fall less in Sahara each year. Sahara is a unique desert of bare rock instead of sands in common. In Sahara, you are able to find scattered patches of grass, thorny plants and low bushes with the Ahaggar peaking at over eight thousands feet.

In the center of Africa lies a deep and long valley, known as the Rift.

Nile, the longest river in Africa rises in the Rift Valley and flows north where ancient and modern crafts float on the smooth Nile. This river runs across the desert. Many people in Egypt live in the Nile Valley and depend upon its water for farming and thus Nile, is called the River of Life.
