Israel - The Past

The population of Israel is Jewish, with Muslim and Christian minorities. Isreal is a state of the Middle East bordered by the Egytian region of the United Arab Republic on the south, by Jordan and the Syrian region of the United Arab Republic on the east, and by Lebanon on the north.

The independent state of Israel forms a part of the historic region that men call Palestine.

A place even for ideas, Palestine has played an important role in the history of mankind. Palestine is the Holy Land where Christ was born and crucified. It is the Promised Land which Moses led his people when they fled from bondage in Egypt.

With the Mediterranean Sea, the coastal plain is the most fertile and the principal river flows to the Dead Sea away from the hilly center.

In the 10th. century B.C., Israelite tribes settled in Palestine. In 1917, Lord Balfour, announced that "His Majesty's view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people."

Israel's voters elected the members of the National Assembly for the first time in 1949.
