Indians and nature

The Indians lived close to nature.

The earth, sea, rivers and lakes, the sun, moon and stars, thunder, lightning and rain meant great deal to the Indians.

So did the trees, animals and other living things. They prayed for divine help when they planted their crops and they gave thanks for the harvest. In each Indian home there was usually a sort of altar where sacred objects were kept.

On his first hunt or battle, the Indians seek the favor of a friendly spirit. Most Indians had some idea about one spirit that they placed above all the others and they called it Wakanda, the Great Mystery. Most Indians were powerful speakers as they watched the wonders of the world. Music helped the Indians to express their feelings and their singing imitated the voices of nature. Symbols are painted or tattoed on their bodies and they carried sacred meanings.
