Little Boats of Admiral Zheng He

The grandfather and the father of Admiral Zheng He told him plenty of interesting stories of their travel afar. Soon the young man got fascinated and started to dream of the great seas. He played with folded paper boats on water surfaces in his village to enjoy they sailed with the wind.

Zheng He interest grew and soon, he learned how to make wooden boats. He was so optmistic about the travel on seas that he continued his wooden boats making and tens of such boats were made. Cleverly, the boats he made were assembled with fabrics and ropes to catch the forces of the wind. He observed how the air is a source of energy and he was glad when he set his miniature vessels to sail at lakeside.

With that little ingredients of a dream as a little boy on those little boats, Zheng He navigated 7 voyages towards ‘Xiyang’. People used to call such little boats, the junks. As Zheng He landed in Melaka, he must had brought plenty of porcelains, silks and other sorts of trade items with him. Perhaps, goods from these junks has made people of the 1950s, 1960s and the 1970s to call Jonker Street, the Junk Road.

The name, Junk, was so popular in the past because the Junks were widely used by the Chinese people.
