Sim Mow Yu’s Beloved Bicycle

Sim Mow Yu cycled around Malacca throughout his life. His bicycle was a huge part of his life and also his faithful friend. Indeed, he had never been separated from his bicycle.

Beside serving as his main mode of transportation, his bicycle was also an exercise equipment for Sim Mow Yu. He devoted his life to education and hence cycling was his only way to get physical exercise. That was the reason why he was still able to contribute to Chinese Education is his late years (97 years old).

Surely as a student, the knowledge you are feeding your mind today is good for you but in doing so, knowing how it comes about, where it comes from and when it began ... is something you have to find out yourself. Perhaps, schools could arrange educational visits to the museum as a tribute to his deeds.

When visits to the museum have become an on-going lifelong element of learning, such wisdom would be beholded in every eyes of the foreign international beholders in due course. (Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder). Our Touch. The Merdeka Touch. Sentuhan Kita. Sentuhan Merdeka. Foreigners would join hands to study this museum as a product of 1Malaysia and see this Beauty.

The earliest bicycle was propelled by pushing the feet against the ground or by running and then lifting the feet as the bicycle was without pedals. Remember the word we used in school during the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and the 1970s 'the bone-shaker' . I personally have used the word 'the bone-shaker' with friend when I was in Malacca High School. Students in Melaka today may no longer used word like 'the bone-shaker' for a bicycle. Bicycle was invented in Germany, about 200 years ago. 10 years after the invention of the chain drive and pneumatic tire on the bicycle, Sim Mow Yu's father made his way from China to Tangkak, Johor Darul Ehsan in 1894.

Another man who like the word bicycle is Uncle George (Uncle George was the former Finance Manager of World Pak Courier renamed later as Nationwide Express Courier) and a poster on the wall of his office in Petaling Jaya read Business is like riding a bicycle, the moment you lift you feet from the pedals, it fails.
