To Germany goes the honor of making a science of fairy-tale collecting.

Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm 1785-1863 and his brother, Wilhelm Karl Grimm 1786-1859 were both scholars. They became interested in preserving folklore records for scientific purposes, and to this end, they gathered a mass of household tales from the lips of the peasantry throughout Germany.

Many of the tales were told them by an old nurse, Frau Viehmannin, wife of a cowherd, who lived at Niederzwerhrn, near Cassel.

For more than a decade, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm amassed the store of old tales before they began to select, to edit and to publish them.

Many German writers followed the Grimms.
