I am coming home for him [By Ezzam Rahman, Singapore] MAPFest 2015 Melaka

This will be a tribute piece of work for my late father. This year, 2015 marks the 5th year anniversary of his departure and it is appropriate for me to be presenting a work in the land that he originated from, Malacca, Malaysia.

The work is not only a dedication but also to all who have experienced lost of any kind.
The intended actions will be slow in pace, simple bodily movements and very curated interaction with the audience. I want the audience to involve themselves emotionally as they experience my presentation.

“I see my works, may they be through the sculptures, installations or performances as unfinished glimpse of the basic human emotions.”

About Ezzam Rahman

Ezzam is most comfortable with installation art and performance art. His works vary from the choice of medium, concepts and strategies of presentation. He favours narratives due to the ability to convey his ideas, to inform, as well as to tease the audience. Ezzam also uses unconventional materials, such as found objects and his own bodily wastes to further his frequent research on impermanence and value verses worth.

Ezzam had curated an exhibition entitled Pulau (Island) for the Stockholm Pride 2012 in Sweden at the Kulturheset, where he presented ten queer related artworks from Singapore. One of his experimental short film is part of a traveling showcase titled Human Frames, by French video art distributor Lowave.

His most recent series of miniature artist’s skin sculptures were commissioned by the Singapore Art Museum and showcased in an exhibition entitled Unearthed in 2014.

He presented an installation art cum performance artwork at SingaPlural, an anchor event for the Singapore Design Week 2015.

Ezzam was nominated as one of the artists for President Young Talents 2015 by the Singapore Art Museum.

Message from The Royal Patron

It is with great pleasure I announce the return of Melaka Art & Performance Festival (MAPFest). The world’s largest and only site specific art and performance festival on a UNESCO World Heritage site drew over 35,000 visitors last year.

The seventh instalment of MAPFest will play host to 45 local and international contemporary dancers, visual artists, multimedia artists, painters, video artists and many more. Visitors to the festival will be dazzled by the diverse and multi-faceted artists, which includes a parkour artist from Russia, shaman from rural Java, and a soulful singer from Australia, just to name a few. I am also pleased to witness the efforts undertaken with the local Melakan community to promote a Heritage Talk titled ‘Old New Melaka’ and a Children Art Exhibition titled ‘Every Child is Gifted’.

MAPFest is an avenue that has transformed and shaped Malaysian’s perspective of the art industry. The 3-day festival will continue to bring joyous and profound memories for participants, visitors and art enthusiasts alike through the blend of diverse culture, heritage and background.

The success of MAPFest is made possible with the strong support from the State Of Melaka, embassies, public and private corporations, members of the media, fans and most importantly the artists. I extend my best wishes and thanks to those involved for their tireless efforts, dedication, contribution and motivation in sustaining and producing the festival.

I welcome you to MAPFest 2015.

Warm Wishes,
YAM Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah
Royal Patron of Melaka Art & Performance Festival (MAPFest)

Message from Creative Director

Selamat Datang

Melaka Arts and Performance Festival (MAPFest) has reached it’s 7th year !

MAP has a life of its own and we find ourselves accommodating and adjusting to this radical evolution to become a vibrant residency for artists and a ground for discovery of authentic art and performances. All in a snappy, excitingly fresh pathways and circuits within a shrinking human globe.

MAP has won many awards and within the areas of arts, global community and culture. We make bold ideas available and accessible to everyone in inexpensive ways with strong and rich cultural emersions for the artists and audiences.

This festival is inclusive, belonging to the artists and the public. In a highly marketed world, we are reminders of why one exist and what is truly valuable to humans.

Themes of spiritual transformation create a frame for works of art.

MAPFest has gained a high national, and international profile, not because it has a huge budget or is spectacular in terms of decorative extravagance, but because of the fresh, bold, diverse and independent authenticity. We inspire one another, support each other and encourage humbler distinctions.

E-Plus is still our major supporter and has matured to E-Plus Global ! … and MAP has won numerous prestigious awards. That’s karma for you.

Enjoy !
