THE CULTURED SCHOOL 育民中学

1922, the year, the Cultured School crystallized. The Eng Choon clan recognised that education is important and they started by organising night classes at the Eng Choon Association, Tan Cheng Lock Street, Melaka. Led by Mr. Chang Zi Xiu, there were about twenty students at that time.

Construction of a new building for the school began in 1936 and was completed in 1940, 14 years after Mr. Tay Aik Liok and his committee bought a piece of land at Kubu Road. However, it was only after 1946 that the new school building served its function since the Japanese Occupation took place between 1942 to 1946.

1947 saw the establishment of 育民中学 (Yok Bin Secondary School) proper, with additional lower secondary classes. Mr. Tay Aik Liok, together with Mr. Lim Sian Soon and the others devoted much to the growth of the school and made history when the Eng Choon Association acquired a sizeable place at Air Leleh Road in anticipation of more providing education to more students.

When Malaysia declared Independence in 1957, Mr. Lau Leong and Tan Sri Datuk Tan Cheng Swee pioneered the School towards its grand official opening with 20 classrooms at Air Leleh Road.

With the untiring and consistent efforts of many people, the Cultured School owned a hall and a canteen in 1970 while a stadium was officiated by the former Deputy Prime Minister, Almarhum Tun Ghafar eighteen year later.
