Steel saves energy

Steel products require energy to produce while steel production is energy intensive.

Luckily, energy is recovered throughout the process of steelmaking for reuse and improvements in energy efficiency have led to reductions of about 50 percent in energy required to produce a tonne of crude steel. This reduction was observed within a 10 years period to 2004.

Steel products also offer savings over the life cycle of the product and is 100 percent recyclable without loss of quality. Recycling reduces the use of energy and other raw materials in the making of new steel. Breakthrough technologies are expected to lead to major changes in the way steel is made the year 2020 and beyond.

Steel is indispensable for energy production and transmission and plays an important role in renewable energy technologies like:
  • converting solar energy into electricity.
  • energy producing wind turbines.
  • wave energy producing.
