Denmark: Copenhagen

The capital, Copenhagen means "merchant haven."

Copenhagen stands on two islands. For centuries, Copenhagen is an important city of culture for the western Scandinavian people.

There are about 500 Danish islands, but many of them are very small. Helsingor, on Zealand at the narrowest part of the Sound, is the ancient Elsinore, the scene of Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet.

As a center of art and learning, the popular King Christian IV added greatly to its importance.
